Links of gloom
Hey it’s not all Flash widgets, blog posts, RSS feeds, tweet streams, and Brightkites out there. Our local economies are making news right now and as you might guess none of that news is particularly upbeat.
Complain that I’m off topic, call me a downer, but the gloomy gus in me is compelled to remind you via the cold hard facts that while you’re busy editing that web page, tweeting that tweet, or measuring that brand to non-brand mix, your local business climate …has some issues:
Unwelcome news of layoffs at Sprint.
CNN’s, Hard Times in the Heartland discusses recent layoffs at Amana:
The economy in the Amana area depends on three sectors: manufacturing, which is dominated by Whirlpool; tourism, centered on the historic homes and farms constructed in the 1800s by the agricultural commune; and farming, specifically for feed corn and soy beans.
Farm subsidies given no mercy on John Stossel’s show tonight, with much of the piece devoted to Nebraska.:
“When there’s progress, certain jobs are destroyed and certain jobs are created,” he said. “The guy who used to deliver ice to my house no longer has that job. If we had tried to save his job, America would have been held back.”

I had a client say to me yesterday, “these are hard times.” My reply was, “these are defining times.”
From my perspective the Midwest is as an important defining moment that would open up a new attitude, identity and midwestern point of view.
Thanks for the links especially the Nebraska/Stossel piece.
I’m a Nebraska boy living in Iowa. It’s always interesting to see why and how Nebraska makes the news.
Keep creating…a story worth repeating,
Mike
